Advice & Guidance
Sources of Advice
There are a number of good books and websites that list the various grant making bodies and their contact details. These are a good starting point to help you find organisations that might support your work. The most useful are as follows:
The Council for the Care of Churches publishes extensive guidance on fundraising and grants on its Churchcare website. This resource was developed for the Church of England but the advice is generally applicable to all places of worship. The guidance may be found here. The council also awards its own grants for conservation projects.
An up to date copy of The Directory of Grant-Making Trusts, published by the Directory of Social Change, should be held in your local library. You can subscribe to the online version here.
Funds for Historic Buildings in England and Wales - A Directory of Sources is available from the Architectural Heritage Fund and lists the possible funding sources for the repair, conservation, conversion and rehabilitation of historic buildings. Over one hundred funding sources specifically relevant to historic buildings are listed, as well as other funding sources whose main remit lies elsewhere (like regeneration or housing) but which support historic building projects. Access this resource via the Architectural Heritage Fund's dedicated funding website.
Heritage Link maintains an online funding directory, which complements Funds for Historic Buildings in England and Wales.
The Heritage Funding Directory is a comprehensive guide to sources of
financial support for anyone seeking to undertake creative projects connected
with the UK's
heritage.
It includes details of the majority of substantive sources of funding from central and local government, non-governmental agencies and grant-making trusts which specialise in supporting heritage projects, as well as many which provide such funding within a wider remit. You can access this resource here.
