Major Grant Givers
There are a number of major organisations which specifically support places of worship. You may find that there is a County Churches Trust in your local area which provides grants or interest free loans. Many of these are currently undersubscribed and are therefore well worth approaching. Some also distribute funds from the Landfill Communities Fund. Details of some other major grant giving organisations are as follows:
Heritage Lottery Fund: The Heritage Lottery Fund is charged with distributing funds from the National Lottery and supports a wide range of projects involving the local, regional and national heritage of the United Kingdom. Website: www.hlf.org.uk
Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme: An interim grant scheme which returns, in grant aid, all or part of the actual amount spent on VAT on eligible repairs to listed places of worship. The Scheme is currently due to continue until the end of March 2011. Website: www.lpwscheme.org.uk
National Churches Trust: The Trust offers grants and interest-free loans to churches, which are in use as places of worship in England and Wales, to help with the cost of essential fabric repairs and the installation of new and/or disabled facilities.Website: www.nationalchurchestrust.org.uk
Allchurches Trust Limited: The Trust is a registered charity established to promote the Christian religion and to consider appeals in support of charitable institutions, churches and church establishments, religious charities and charities conserving UK heritage, including the local community and those concerned with the welfare of the disadvantaged and disabled. Website: www.allchurches.co.uk
Cadw: A new 'Spring Clean' grant scheme was launched in 2008. A grant of a maximum of £500 per building is available for a range of minor repairs - for example, cleaning rainwater goods or securing slipped roof slates. The grants have now been allocated for this year but we hope that the scheme will run again next year. Visit the Cadw website for further details.
